Biggest Loser thoughts and opinions 10/6/09
Bywtf?
I saw some of them practically being crucified this episode. All these people hanging on for dear life suspended above a pool. Their grip being taxed to the limit. And what exactly was the point of that? Do they not know how draining that can be on their nervous system? And why the hell can’t Jillian teach any of them to do kettlebell swings properly? Oh wait…maybe its because she can’t do them herself.
And good job Bob Harper…you injured Coach Mo. That’s real productive and conducive to progress. And them pushing them because “They didn’t see what they were ordering that week?” Well productive progress in fat loss is about balance. You expel too many calories while taking in too little and your metabolism compensates by slowing itself down. That was built into our physiology back when we were living in caves and picked up chicks by “giving them a little tap on the head”. Other then that the weight loss also is a loss of muscle…and water.
The way they should be doing it is measuring body fat loss. The best way to do that is with Hydrodensitometry Weighing (Underwater Weighing). Yeah I know what you are saying “but regular people can’t do that” Well since when is that show about what regular people can do? Can they traing all day long and have chefs prepare healthy meals for them? No. Can you? Maybe…if you have that kind of time and money surely you can find a facility to way you under water. If not a cheaper solution is skinfold tests. If your body fat percentage is going down you are doing a good job.
Or they could just measure their circumference. A smaller circumference means they are losing belly fat which is what everybody wants.
But wait no…that would make sense.
Screw it here is phase 2 of my response to the Biggest Loser Workouts You need healthy and nutritious eating to go along with this. Check out this book The Diet Solution and/or My Fat Burning Kitchen to go along with it. Oh and here is the link to phase 1 of my response to the Biggest Loser Workouts

Eric I’ve seen plenty of workout videos and training methods from you, but you don’t talk about diet all that often.
What does your day-to-day diet look like? I guess from a quick look at the Fat Burning Kitchen site that you keep to a paleo/hunter-gatherer style diet?

I don’t talk about diet because I am not a nutritionist and don’t pretend to be one. my expertise is in strength and conditioning.
i have had success with the warrior diet, macrobolic nutrition as well as knowledge i have gotten from the book the truth about six pack abs and from Isabel (from diet solution) and also from Jon Benson and John Berardi…hmmm maybe I do know quite a bit
just pick a nutrition program and stick to it…and give it long enough to do the job

I understand you’re not a nutritionist but it’s still nice to hear what’s working for other people
I have no trouble with my current diet, was just wondering what you’re found works well for you.

The one thing that always pisses me off about this show is that each episode ends with a “weigh-in,” and total body weight is the only measure of success. Correct me if I’m wrong here, but muscle weighs a lot more than fat. Now, I remember a few seasons back where this one guy enjoyed the exercise so much that he went completely batsh*t and became rather muscular. His competitor, on the other hand, didn’t exercise nearly as much, and was thus skinny—and a wimp. Guy no.1 and his wife ended up losing because guy no.1 weighed too much—although I bet his fat->muscle ratio (not to mention his health) was significantly better than that of guy no.2…

You are absolutely right…and it pisses me off too (what doesn’t?). When it comes to training people for fat loss the way I normally do things (for the females that is) is go by their dress size precisely for that reason. It isn’t even abnormal to gain a little bit of weight while losing fat. Drink a couple glasses of water your weight goes up.
And that is also why I say that the body mass index chart that insurance companies use to justify upping your rates is a bunch of horse shit. According to that thing yours truly is borderline pork chop. I’m not. I don’t know if you heard but there is a state that is planning on issuing a “fat tax”. Great idea to generate a little extra revenue but it won’t change a damn thing and they need a good way of testing it since current methods suck.

I am an exercise physiologist, and have been in the field for 15 years. I am absolutely appalled at “The Biggest Loser”. I can’t even watch it. When my clients ask me what I think about this or that when it comes to the show, it literally sends chills down my spine. This show makes a joke of our industry….

anybody that knows anything about exercise and especially what levels deconditioned people need are also appalled. You are not alone.
