How To Flatten Your Belly And Why Everyone Is Doing It Wrong

By admin

how to flatten your belly and why everyone is doing it wrong…well not everybody but almost everybody.

Far and away the request I get so often is for ab training. When I ask why they usually say something like “I want to flatten my belly, stomach, abs” or whatever nickname they choose to describe their “core”. When they describe their plan of attack I have to inform them that what they are trying to accomplish is physiologically impossible. How many times do I have to say it? YOU CAN’T SPOT REDUCE TO ANY SIGNIFICANT EFFECT!!! Further more doing your crunches might even be making you fatter.

Why?

Because the way people go about it is by trying to induce a hypertrophy response. It gets a little geeky but when you train your abs the way they do the muscles fill up with a goo called sarcoplasm. This sarcoplasm is what makes a muscle look bigger without it actually getting any stronger.

Ok so think about it a second. You aren’t reducing your belly fat and at the same time you are making the muscle underneath the belly fat bigger. Guess what that does….that’s right it makes you look fatter. So in essence they are accomplishing the EXACT OPPOSITE of what they wanted.

So what is the right way to do it? Well I tell people to ignore it. Train your body as one unit and your abs will get the proper kind of stimulation that won’t make them over grown. When you apply proper tension to your lifts they get a workout that tones them and makes them strong. If you have a good nutrition plan it will reveal your abs with the significant loss of body fat. Here is a diet that I have heard excellent things about even though I don’t practice it myself..
