sport specific training or not?

By

You know recently I have been getting asked about training for K1 fighters and such and how I would go about training athletes. Training athletes for sports isn’t as complicated as many make it out to be. Yes the programs should be individualized but how individualized do you really need it to be?

My take is it depends on the sport and the athlete. If I have an MMA guy and he is as strong as a bull but his conditioning sucks obviously I am going to put more effort into his conditioning. If he is well conditioned then I would put more of an emphasis in strength. In a sport where you can’t afford to have weak links you have to strengthen it to make the entire chain strong. Remember a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. They also need to be strengthened in their “in between areas” such as positions of extreme compromise. Swings and turkish getups galore!

In other sports I would figure what kind of training the sport requires. Powerlifters obviously aren’t going to require a lot of conditioning. What they need is more strength. Marathon runners probably won’t need strength. (even though both could use the opposite to make them a well rounded athlete).

I was wondering what type of training I should do for soccer? I haven’t played soccer for about two years and I think that with the proper training techniques I could easily become an even better player than I was before.

For general preparation strength and conditioning I would probably just have you do swings and getups. What you absolutely must do however is soccer drills which I am not familiar with. Remember you have to practice your sport to get great at it.
