Alright I normally like to blog at least once a week but I didn’t really have any time so I am just going to post an article here by uber fat loss expert Alwyn Cosgrove. Alwyn Cosgrove has some of the best fat loss programs out there and a lot of the other good ones were created from research and practices taught by him. He is one of the people I always research to get cutting edge stuff because his stuff works plain and simple.

The Problem with Weight Loss: Your Body Will Do The Opposite.

Homeostasis is the property of a living organism, that regulates its internal environment so as to maintain a stable, constant condition.

When you don’t drink enough water in the short term — often the body retains water. It attempts to maintain homeostasis by counteracting the stresses we put on it.

When you drink a lot of extra water – your body excretes more water to maintain balance.

When we weight train — we actually break down muscle tissue. And the body responds by building new muscle. It attempts to maintain homeostasis by doing the reverse of the stimulus we placed on it.

When a male takes supplemental testosterone — the body shuts down its own production in a bid to maintain homeostasis.

When we immunize children against disease — we actually inject them with a small dose of that disease. The immune system recognizes the vaccine as foreign, destroys it, and ‘remembers’ it. When the virulent version of an agent comes along, the immune system is thus prepared to respond. In order to prepare the body to defend against a disease – we expose it to the disease – and it responds by doing the opposite – it destroys the disease.

In almost every situation I can think of, the body tries to maintain homeostasis by “doing the opposite” of the stimulus.

How does this apply to weight loss?

Now we know that while you are doing it — low intensity exercise burns primarily fat.

Higher intensity exercise actually burns more carb stores than fat.

But in every head to head comparison, high intensity exercise results in more fat loss than low intensity exercise – even though the more intense work may burn a lesser percentage of fat during the exercise session.

Burning glycogen results in a larger amount of fat lost than burning fat directly.

The body responds by “doing the opposite”…

Break down muscle to grow more muscle. Burn glycogen to lose more fat.

I designed Warp Speed Fat Loss training program to specifically take advantage of this ‘law’ of nature so that when your body “does the opposite” you’ll end up with faster and greater fat loss.

As dry and boring a lot of people are that are involved in a complex subject like fitness there are at least a couple personalities that I find thoroughly entertaining. Watch a presentation or anything that allows their personality to shine and you will know exactly what I am talking about. In no particular order I give you my top 5 picks.

1) Pavel Tsatsouline- Pavel Tsatsouline (the evil Russian) has written several books and appeared in numerous dvd’s published and produced by Dragondoor. He is the chief instructor of the RKCs (of which I am a part of). His dry sense of humor really shines through in his writings and presentations and I can’t help but to laugh because he is a genuinely funny guy. When we went through the RKC certification course my comrades and I must have spent the entire car ride to the hotel impersonating him. Calling everybody his comrade and talking about mullets, big sissies and mutants its hard not to get caught up in it all. Comrade you are in Soviet territory and Pavel will make you a better man…or woman :)

2)Arnold Schwarzenegger- I know you might be thinking that old Arnie isn’t a fitness pro but he is. He helped astronauts in Nasa to be able to retain muscle in space and wrote the opus Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Bodybuidling Encyclopedia. Lets face it its his personality that stole the show especially in that memorable scene in Pumping Iron where he was talking about how good the pump feels. His charisma is off the charts.

3)Alwyn Cosgrove- Whenever I see Alwyn give a presentation on fat loss I am always pumped to hear it. Not just because he is extremely knowledgeable but also because his sarcastic sense of humor and absolutely foul mouth tends to leave me in stitches. The articles of this Scotsman are also funny as hell when you actually read them. Dig through his stuff and read what he has to say about pickles and you’ll see what I mean.

4)Zach Evan Esh- Ah the Underground strength coach. KILL IT BEAST! Having met Zach in person you would think that his enthusiasm that he displays in his videos and writings is just something he does in front of the camera but he is really like that…and I have a blast impersonating him. I have never done any in front of him but I guarantee he would get a kick out of them.

5) Vince Delmonte- You can tell Vince is a character in his videos but it isn’t until you actually hang around Vince that you know just what hes like. I had a blast with Vince and I was impersonating him so much that I almost took on his Irish sounding accent (even though he is an Italian that lives in Canada) permanently. “Vince you made it!” “Yeah that was a close one!” (you had to have been there to get what I am talking about)

ok I don’t often do this but I do feel compelled. I recently received a newsletter from legendary strength trainer and fat loss specialist Alwyn Cosgrove. He is one of my favorite personalities in the business not only because he is extremely knowledgeable but because his presentations crack me up. I dare anybody to sit through one of his lectures without laughing. One thing though that is no laughing matter is Alwyn’s ongoing struggle with cancer. Back in 04 he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and beat it. Then he relapsed and had to do it all over again.

The thing that also sucks is that cancer is a fairly common thing that still afflicts people everywhere. I have had several clients who have had it and they will say it makes you take on a new perspective on life. My neighbor across the street died from it. So as you probably already know cancer sucks a big one. Another thing that also sucks is that cancer research is mostly funded by regular charity from people like you and me. While the government is bailing out companies who give huge salaries to their employees cancer research goes over looked by them even though cancer is everybody’s problem. So what is the point of this rant? A cd has been put together with articles by several legends to purchase and all proceeds go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

This CD contains articles from the leading fitness specialists of our day including:

Adam Campbell; Alan Aragon; Bill Hartman; Bob Youngs; Brian Grasso; Chad Waterbury; Charles Staley; Chris Mohr; Chris Shugart; Craig Ballantyne; Dan John; Dave Tate; Dax Moy; The Doorman; Eric Cressey; Gray Cook; Brett Jones; Harry Selkow; Jack Reape; James Smith; Jason C Brown; Jim “Smitty” Smith; Jason Ferruggia; Jimmy Smith; Joe DeFranco; Joe Dowdell; Joe Stankowski; John Alvino; John Berardi; Julia Ladewski; Keith Scott; Lee Taft; Lori Incledon; Lou Schuler; Lyle McDonald; Mark Philippi; Michael Stare; Mike Boyle; Mike Mahler; Mike Mejia; Mike Robertson; Mike Rousell; Nick Grantham; Pat Beith; Pavel Tsatsouline; Robert Dos Remedios; Ryan Lee; Steve Shafley; Susan Hill; TC Luoma; Todd Hamer; Tony Gentilcore; Tony Reynolds and Zach Even-Esh

We originally intended to publish this collection as a book. However – at over 800 pages – costs were prohibitive and we went with the CD option to maximize our contribution.

So many of these people have directly influenced the way I teach, my program design and my own training. I ordered one even though money is tight (I am getting married after all) and I can’t wait to see all the stuff in there. Order it, help the fight against cancer and learn a thing or two.
