Why I don’t do kipping pullups.

Posted by: | Comments (1)

It is too hard for me to do. You see making the pullup a hip dominant exercise like it were a kettlebell swing or an olympic snatch is much to difficult for me to do. I just simply wouldn’t have control over the momentum it generates when I have a 53lb kettlebell either hanging on a chain from my waste or from my foot. At that point it becomes a like the human equivalent of a crane with a wrecking ball attached and that is bad news for everybody.

For me pullups were intended to be a strength and endurance exercise rather then for conditioning. In hardstyle we have better tools for the job. For many pullups become a strength endurance exercise. “How many can you do?” is a question that used to be more common then “How much can you bench?”. If I had it my way (and I never do) more people would be doing pullups. When I was a high school wrestler I was the guy who had to taxi some of the younger guys home. Like a taxi they had to pay me…with pullups.

Since we try to keep our reps low and our sets high while remaining fresh and since I don’t normally get tired during pullups till right around rep 27 I have to add weight to keep the exercise useful. My goal being strength this is the appropriate way of doing things. If I had to go for endurance I would have to learn to kip. My personal best is 35 non kipping so endurance is no longer a goal of mine hence no reason for me to learn to kip.

So how can you improve your pullups? Well first as with any training program you have to figure out where you are, and where you want to go. There would be no point in trying for high reps when you can’t even do a single rep with bodyweight alone. So if you can’t do a single rep you could give yourself a bit of a jump to get some momentum working on your side. Try to yank yourself up and make sure you are fresh each time you do that. Once you are able to do a single dead hang pullup practice it often. A simple way to do this is to get one of those doorway pullup bars and do a single rep whenever you walk through that doorway. Just make sure you are always fresh when you do it. Give that a week or 2 and take a couple days off and try to see how many you can get. When you are able to get between 5 and 8 give those Russian ladders a try. If you are on the Enter the Kettlebell Rite of Passage program do the pull up option and follow Pavel’s directions (as you should).

Ladders and reverse ladders are a great way of getting a lot of quality pullups under your belt. Don’t listen to the people who read out of the typical fitness magazine when they say to do lat pull downs, bicep curls and straight arm pulldowns (would you believe I actually had to look that up just now? That is how long its been since I have used that exercise). Which do you think would be better for pullups; to try to isolate the muscles separately and engage them in movement patterns unrelated to pullups or to practice doing a lot of pullups while staying fresh the entire time? Musicians and athletes do that and you could learn a bit from their wisdom.

If you want to be able to do a lot of pullups try doing higher rep ladders. Say rungs that include the numbers 5, 10 and 15 if you are able to do 20 or more. If your goal is to do 16 and you can do 10 then 2, 4, 6 and 8 would be a better choice. You want to be strong add weight and keep the reps low.

Pullup power is upon you, kipping or otherwise. You are a big kid now.

how should you train?

Posted by: | Comments (4)

Well that actually depends on what you want to get out of a training program (duh). If you want to be strong you have to go on a strength training program. If you want to be lean you should be on a fat loss program. If you want to increase your conditioning you should be on a conditioning program. If you want all of those…you need to find a way to incorporate elements from each.

Now that is a little trickier then it sounds. You see certain elements can interfere with others. For example you wouldn’t expect someone to run marathons and compete in a powerlifting event within a month because the 2 of them interfere.

So what is the happy medium?

Well thats individualized but…since fat loss mainly comes from diet you can go on a strength and conditioning program and lose fat, gain strength and get to new levels of conditioning.

Take your pick.

Stories from this past seminar

So the first day of a seminar on how to get more clients into my bootcamps and kettlebell classes. Senior RKC Dave Whitley (whom you may know as the guy who lit the fire under my ass to take the RKC cert by rolling up frying pans with his bare hands and handed it to me and said join us) and BJ Bliffert RKC invited me up to the room they were staying in just to kind of hang out before we all went out to dinner. I walk up there and BJ pulls out a bag of nails and horseshoes for the purposes of bending. So we are sitting there in the room and I am laughing inside of my head because only us RKC’s would do this for entertainment. Laugh out loud.

As dry and boring a lot of people are that are involved in a complex subject like fitness there are at least a couple personalities that I find thoroughly entertaining. Watch a presentation or anything that allows their personality to shine and you will know exactly what I am talking about. In no particular order I give you my top 5 picks.

1) Pavel Tsatsouline- Pavel Tsatsouline (the evil Russian) has written several books and appeared in numerous dvd’s published and produced by Dragondoor. He is the chief instructor of the RKCs (of which I am a part of). His dry sense of humor really shines through in his writings and presentations and I can’t help but to laugh because he is a genuinely funny guy. When we went through the RKC certification course my comrades and I must have spent the entire car ride to the hotel impersonating him. Calling everybody his comrade and talking about mullets, big sissies and mutants its hard not to get caught up in it all. Comrade you are in Soviet territory and Pavel will make you a better man…or woman :)

2)Arnold Schwarzenegger- I know you might be thinking that old Arnie isn’t a fitness pro but he is. He helped astronauts in Nasa to be able to retain muscle in space and wrote the opus Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Bodybuidling Encyclopedia. Lets face it its his personality that stole the show especially in that memorable scene in Pumping Iron where he was talking about how good the pump feels. His charisma is off the charts.

3)Alwyn Cosgrove- Whenever I see Alwyn give a presentation on fat loss I am always pumped to hear it. Not just because he is extremely knowledgeable but also because his sarcastic sense of humor and absolutely foul mouth tends to leave me in stitches. The articles of this Scotsman are also funny as hell when you actually read them. Dig through his stuff and read what he has to say about pickles and you’ll see what I mean.

4)Zach Evan Esh- Ah the Underground strength coach. KILL IT BEAST! Having met Zach in person you would think that his enthusiasm that he displays in his videos and writings is just something he does in front of the camera but he is really like that…and I have a blast impersonating him. I have never done any in front of him but I guarantee he would get a kick out of them.

5) Vince Delmonte- You can tell Vince is a character in his videos but it isn’t until you actually hang around Vince that you know just what hes like. I had a blast with Vince and I was impersonating him so much that I almost took on his Irish sounding accent (even though he is an Italian that lives in Canada) permanently. “Vince you made it!” “Yeah that was a close one!” (you had to have been there to get what I am talking about)

Feels good

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Alright I didn’t really want to post this because it is almost going to sound like I am patting myself on the back and that isn’t my intention. Over the weekend I was at a Ryan Lee seminar about internet marketing. Ryan Lee was a fitness professional who also was great at business and has since taught many many other fitness professionals how to make products so that we don’t all starve to death. Being a personal trainer isn’t an easy living. Its very up and down and the hours are murderous. I’ll give an example. Right now it is 2am in the morning. I will have to get up in about 3 and a half hours to go off to my first client of the day. I have 3 sessions tomorrow morning all of them a half hour apart and then I will take a nap. Normally the next sessions would happen at around 5 in the evening. Crazy schedule right?

Anyways the fact that there are so many great products out there on that are available to you he is pretty much directly responsible for. Mike Geary who wrote The Truth About Six Pack Abs was a student of his. Craig Ballantyne who wrote Turbulence Training is a student of his. The Underground Strength Coach is a student of his. John Ducane who is the CEO of dragondoor and the driving force behind Pavel and the RKC’s is a student of his. Alwyn Cosgrove the list can go on. Arnel Ricafranca the six pack abs expert is a student of his. Vince Delmonte the skinny guy savior etc. etc.

the people who create those worthless ab machines and hip hop abs are not.

So you see he is almost directly responsible for the GREAT stuff you see in a sea of crap. For that we fitness professionals who would be starving have him to thank. And we aren’t the only ones.

At the seminar one of the presenters had talked about some of the things that are going on in Africa and asked us to donate some money. Ryan Lee offered one of his high end products to anybody who donates $500 or more. Now I am a sucker for things like that. Getting a great product and having the money go to a great cause? I just had to make myself $500 lighter.

Within an hour they raised around $27,000. That’s enough to build a well, a school and the teachers to go in it. Luckily for me my fiance is a bleeding heart like I am because I am getting married and money is tight. I gotta say though it is a good feeling knowing that I helped build a school that will hopefully be finished by September of this year for kids that are starving. Now they can better themselves.

God bless Ryan Lee for making it all possible. I am not a richer man yet (though hopefully I will be) but I am a better man because of it.

Thank you Ryan Lee.
