The Ultimate Fighter 5/20/09
ByWarning there are spoilers
It’s a shame really.
Tonight’s episode was Jason Dent (from Team USA) against Jeff Lawson (from Team UK). I will admit I was rooting for Jason because I am American and I will take the wins any honest way we can and even though Jason won the fight I have to admit I am pretty disappointed. Somewhat in both of the fighters. Jason because he wasn’t aggressive enough. And Jeff because of his lack of conditioning.
With everything we know about strength and conditioning I don’t think there should be any excuses when it comes to this sort of thing at all. I know I know he was sick for 10 days with Bronchitus and yes that does play a role but he should be able to have come back from it. 2 – 3 sessions a week with the V02 max snatch protocol from Kenneth Jay’s book Viking Warrior Conditioning has done wonders for people’s conditioning and in record time. I am currently using a version of it (I am not sure where I put it and am so close to just giving up looking for it and ordering another one) to get myself to be able to do 200 snatches with a 24kg kettlebell in 10 minutes time. And whoever his coaches were they should have known better.
In a sport as brutal as cage fighting you can’t afford any kind of weaknesses that your competitor would have a chance to exploit. And conditioning in any sport like that is so important.
Also Jason should have been able to see that Jeff’ was gassing. The signs of it are easily apparent. Their mouths open trying to get more oxygen to the blood. They start moving around like they are drunk and their hands begin to drop. The second that happens they immediately are at a disadvantage. The kind of strength endurance and conditioning that kettlebells provide can mean the difference between a win and a loss because you could be great that first round but if you don’t get the win early and you are gassing later chances are you are going to get your ass kicked.
